USA: Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity in Applied Math at UCLA

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), a national researchinstitute supported by The National Science Foundation, is now acceptingapplications for its 2006 Summer Program, Research in Industrial Projects forStudents (RIPS). RIPS is a nine-week, intensive residential researchexperience for math, engineering, computer science and physical/life scienceundergraduate students that assigns teams of four students to a projectdesigned by an industrial sponsor. Industrial sponsors provide importantdirection to the students about their project. Students also visit theindustrial site at least once during the summer. Last year’s project sponsorswere: Arete Associates, Inc., The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, LawrenceLivermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories, Hewlett Packard, Inc.,Microsoft, Inc.,TimeLogic, Inc. and Pixar Animation Studios. Student participants are selected from an international applicant pool toprovide the broadest possible intellectual and cultural experience to thestudents who participate in our program. Students who have a sufficientbackground for the program are usually rising juniors, seniors or are about tograduate.
