Bulgaria: The OSI Scholarships Program at The American University in Bulgaria
The OSI Scholarship program is administered upon an agreementbetween the American University in Bulgaria and the AUBG ProgramCoordinators in the eligible countries. All OSI Financial Awards from2007-2008 will be Full and Partial Awards, and will be given preferablyto good students who otherwise would not be able to cover the fullcosts of their education:
Full Awards are called OSI Scholarships and are limitedin number. They cover tuition, residence hall and student activity feesat AUBG. All students who receive an OSI Scholarship are expected tocover the cost of food, books, travel, visas and residence permits, andhealth insurance. These scholarships cover the eight-semester periodrequired to complete an AUBG degree provided that the recipientmaintains the required cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Partial awards are need based OSI-funded partial financial aid awards on top of AUBG need and merit based financial aid awards.
Participating countries (2007 – 2008 Fellowship Year):
Albania,Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia,Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, FYROM (Macedonia), Moldova, Mongolia,Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia and the region of Kosovo,Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
A citizen of one of the countries listed in eligible countries who holds or will hold a high school degree by August 2006, and meets all of the eligibility requirements, may apply for the Soros Scholarship.

Applications
Applications can be submitted on-line or downloaded.Applicants are encouraged to submit an on-line application. If on-lineservice is unavailable, applications should be downloaded and printedby the applicant. Any applications submitted after the deadline(December 22, 2006 for paper based, and January 1, 2007 for onlineapplications) will not be reviewed for the OSI Scholarship but will bereviewed for regular AUBG admission.
Supporting documentation to be included with the on-line or paper based application. The essay can be attached with the online application:
• Official high school transcript with GPA
• Certified English translation of transcript
• Three letters of recommendation, with translation if not written in English
• Completed Financial aid documentation – sent to AUBG Admissions office by March 1, 2007
• Students, who have taken the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Test, should require ETS to send their official scores to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving official scores is 2451.
Financial Assistance
Any student interested in applying to AUBG should be encouraged to complete the application for financial assistance,as AUBG and OSI financial aid will be awarded based on merit and need.Many admitted students receive substantial AUBG and OSI fundedfinancial assistance in the form of grants, loans, and work-study. Someof the students who are not selected as OSI Scholars may also beeligible for a merit scholarship, which is awarded by the AUBGScholarship Committee. Students who do not submit the application forfinancial assistance and the supporting documentation along with theirapplication for admission are not considered for any financial aid.
Testing
The AUBG Admissions office strongly recommends that all applicants take the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Testsoffered in the country for admission purposes, and have their officialtest reports sent directly to the AUBG Admissions office by filling inthe AUBG code for receiving official test scores – 2451.
In cases when the applicants have not taken the tests already, or are not planning to take them by the end of January 2007, the AUBG Coordinator will be responsible for administering the Institutional TOEFL (ITP) onJanuary 20, 2007 and the Institutional SAT (MAPS - Multiple AssessmentPrograms) on February 24, 2007.
The Institutional TOEFL and SAT tests are acceptable only at AUBGand not at other institutions. If an applicant has taken a regularTOEFL or SAT, official scores must be requested by the applicant to besent directly to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving officialscores is 2451.
Final Selection
The selection of finalists for the OSI Scholarships takes place atAUBG in March by representatives of AUBG’s Admissions Committee.
Assessment of applicants is based on their academic records, on testscores, on ratings on the essay included in the application, on theirgeneral interests outside of academics, and on financial need. Previousstudy outside their home country does not increase the possibility ofthe candidates’ receiving a Soros Scholarship. The decisions of theAdmissions Committee are final.
