GUIDELINES
RAISON D’ETRE
Facilitating and renewing the community of Canadianists by supporting the work ofyoung scholars.

ELIGIBILITY
Those in the social sciences and humanities who are in the process of preparing agraduate thesis or doctoral dissertation on Canada.

PURPOSE
To enable successful candidates to spend 4-6 weeks at a Canadian university otherthan their own doing research related to their thesis or dissertation in the field ofCanadian Studies. The scholarship is not intended to initiate a thesis or dissertationbut rather to provide access to crucial scholarly information and resources in Canadain support of a thesis/dissertation that is close to or at the point of writing.

CONDITIONS OF AWARD
1. The student must be at the thesis or dissertation stage;
2. The student must have obtained in writing the support of a faculty member at aCanadian university who has agreed to act as the student’s academic sponsorduring the tenure of the award. The sponsor will act in an informal capacity andwill arrange for library privileges, contacts with other faculty and students, andgenerally try to facilitate the student’s research. The academic sponsor will notbe expected to act in the role of supervisor.

PROCEDURE
Each applicant is to be nominated by his/her national Canadian Studies association.Each association will forward no more than 3 nominations to the ICCS. No morethan two scholarships per association will be awarded at each adjudication.The nomination will comprise:
1. A completed application form which will be signed by the candidate and thepresident of the national association;
2. A one-page short proposal outlining the thesis/dissertation project. Theproposal must also state clearly why work at the university in question isessential to the project and how such a visit will enhance the quality of thethesis or dissertation;ICCS Graduate Student Scholarship 2/3
3. An official university transcript (in countries where it cannot be obtained, aletter from the registrar is required);
4. A letter of support from the student’s thesis/dissertation supervisor;
5. A copy of the letter from the faculty member in a Canadian universityindicating his/her willingness to act as the student’s academic sponsor

CRITERIA
Successful applicants will be selected according to the following criteria:The clarity of the proposal and its methodology;The proposal’s potential contribution to knowledge and/or to its field;The likelihood of the project’s being accomplished during the period of theaward;The demonstrated need for the research to be carried out in Canada;The strength of the letter of support;The past academic awards as demonstrated by transcripts, awards, anddistinctions.
NB: Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

SELECTION
The nominations will be evaluated and ranked, and successful candidates selectedby an adjudicatory board appointed by the International Council for CanadianStudies. A brief rationale will be provided for unsuccessful applications. Decisionsare not appealable. Results are usually announced in March/April.
Note: It will be the responsibility of each national association to ensure that all those whoagree to be an academic sponsor are informed in writing of the success or failure of eachapplicant in obtaining the scholarship. Upon the student’s return, he/she will file a writtenreport to the ICCS, outlining what was accomplished during the tenure of the scholarship.

NUMBER AND VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Ten (10) awards per yearUp to C$3,500 for all expenses. Smaller awards may be made.NOTE: Some Canadian universities have generously agreed to offer a CanadianStudies Institutional Support Award of C$1,500 to an awardee who has chosen todo his/her research on their campus (some restrictions apply).

Participating institutions include: Acadia University, University of Alberta, University ofManitoba (limited to one award annually), Université de Montréal (limited to one awardannually), Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Ottawa, and Simon FraserUniversity.
