Scholarship award amounts currently range from approximately $14,000 to $18,000 for the academic year, are applied directly to a student's account, and require no service in return by the recipient. Scholarship recipients are required to enroll full time for both semesters of the academic year and make satisfactory academic progress.

The Women's Guild Scholarships and prizes are awarded annually and are made
possible thanks to individual gifts from guild members. The scholarships are
open to female students at least thirty years of age who are enrolled in a
graduate program at Boston University as of May 1. Applicants do not have to
be full-time students, or U.S. citizens. The deadline for the application is

SED General Scholarships are awarded annually to approximately 60 entering and 12 continuing students. Financial need is not a consideration in the awarding of SED general scholarships, which are based on academic and professional achievement. SED General Scholarships are currently set at $18,000.

Students who seek classroom teaching certification through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) or EdM in Elementary, Early Childhood Education, TESOL, Bilingual Education, Education of the Deaf, Special Education, or Human Movement programs are eligible for a separate pool of scholarships based on merit and financial need. These scholarships are usually one-half tuition.

Response Scholarships, based on academic and professional achievement, as well as financial need, are available to entering full-time students who demonstrate through past experience and future plans a commitment to work in one of the following areas: international education, urban settings, disadvantaged populations service, or a position emphasizing the improvement of the quality of education. Ten scholarships of approximately one-half tuition are awarded.

Ansin Intercultural Research Fund is supported by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ansin. The annual award of approximately $6,000-$9,000 is granted to a continuing SED doctoral student in support of relevant dissertation research contributing to ethnic and intercultural relations in society. The graduate student is not required to enroll full time. To complete an application, graduate students must indicate an intention to apply for the award on the SED Graduate Applications for Financial Assistance, submit a letter of recommendation from an appropriate faculty member, write a letter of application, and submit an abstract of the dissertation proposal. The application deadline is May 1 of each year.

The Kelly Elizabeth Stephens Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by Dorothy and Robert Stephens, Kelly's parents, to celebrate Kelly's accomplishments and to encourage similar achievements in other School of Education students. Kelly was a teacher of English in Indonesia who was fatally injured in a volcano eruption. Each year, part or all of the income from the permanently endowed fund is awarded to a deserving Indonesian graduate student on the basis not only of a commitment to teaching-especially in the field of English or international education development-but also of financial need. In addition to completing the SED Entering Graduate Application for Financial Assistance, applicants must submit an essay in English explaining why they would like to study at Boston University School of Education, how the Stephens Scholarship would help them achieve their goals, and their plans for achievement in the decade following graduation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowship is awarded in memory of this distinguished Boston University alumnus in honor of his ideal of peace and freedom through nonviolence. Eligible African Americans entering a full-time graduate degree program are nominated by the School of Education on the basis of outstanding academic and professional achievement, to receive consideration by the University's Martin Luther King, Jr., Fellowship Awards Committee. Recipients receive a scholarship that covers tuition and fees and a stipend for living expenses. The fellowship may be renewed for a period of up to two years. In order to be eligible for consideration, the student must complete an SED Entering Graduate Application for Financial Assistance indicating a desire to be considered for the fellowship, and must be admitted to a degree/certificate program in SED by February 15.

The Boston University Whitney Young Fellowship is awarded in recognition of the outstanding contributions made to the fields of social work, urban studies, and African American studies by Whitney M. Young, Jr. The competition is open to entering and continuing African American students at Boston University. Applicants should prove proficiency in a field related to race or urban problems and demonstrate the qualities of creativity, humor, and commitment to community action that were characteristics of Whitney M. Young, Jr. The fellowship provides tuition, fees, and a stipend for living expenses. Financial need and enrollment status are considered in determining the award level. Application forms are available in November and must be requested from the Boston University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, 705 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 112, Boston, MA 02215. The deadline for submission of the completed application and all attachments is February 1.
