The development of computational methods for turbulent reacting flows isone of the research activities at the University of Wyoming (MathematicsDepartment). Special emphasis is placed on the use of stochastic methodsand the development of advanced numerical solvers. Such methods arealready used for turbulent flame calculations. Funding for two graduateassistantships for Ph.D. candidates is now available as part of theDEPSCoR funded project “Integrated Computational/Experimental Study ofTurbulence Modification and Mixing Enhancement in Swirling Jets”.

The graduate student will develop and apply different numerical methodsto simulate swirling jet flows (experimental data for comparisons areavailable). The prospective student is expected to rapidly becomeacquainted with commonly used CFD techniques and approaches such as LES,RANS, etc, during the early stage of residence at UW. The assistantshipis available after January 1, 2006. The assistantship provides about$14000 per year plus tuition waiver and health insurance. Subjected togood standing in graduate study the Mathematics department will extendthe financial aid (in the form of graduate teaching assistantship orresearch assistantship) beyond the 2.5 year period of the grant supportin order to allow the candidate to complete the Ph.D. degree. There is apossibility of additional financial aid during summer either by doingresearch or teaching.
