University of Canterbury Doctoral and Masters Scholarships

Scholarships are offered bi-annually for study towards a Ph.D. degree (Doctoral) or for the thesis year of a Masters degree (Masters Part II). International students compete with New Zealand students for these scholarships and competition is very keen. Applicants must have gained a first class honours degree or the equivalent. International students who meet this criterion and who have been granted admission to a Ph.D. or Masters degree by thesis (Part II) at this university are eligible to apply.

The value of the Doctoral scholarship is a living allowance of $15,000 per annum, paid monthly and payment of the tuition fees at the domestic rate. The living allowance should be adequate to meet expenses of a single student. Significant additional funding (of the order of NZ$14,000 -$18,000 depending on the course) would still be required to meet the full international tuition fee.

There are two rounds for the Doctoral scholarships. Applications close on 15 October and 15 May. Students must enrol in a doctoral programme by 1 June (for those applying by 15 October) in the year following application, or 1 December (for those applying by 15 May) in the year of application. Doctoral scholarship application forms are available from the Scholarships Office, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch 8020, and from the University website in March and August.

A small number of Canterbury Scholarships are awarded each year to the top applicants for a Doctoral Scholarship. No separate application is necessary and the value of a Canterbury Scholarship is a living allowance of $20,000 per annum, paid monthly and payment of the tuition fees at the domestic rate.

The value of the Masters scholarship is a living allowance of $9,000 per annum, also paid monthly and payment of the tuition fees at the domestic rate. The living allowance will need to be supplemented by the student. Significant additional funding (of the order of NZ$14,000 -$18,000 depending on the course) would still be required to meet the full international tuition fee.

There are two rounds for the Masters scholarships. Applications close on 15 May and 15 October. Students must enrol in a Masters programme by 31 March (for those applying by 15 October) in the year following application, or by 30 October for those applying by 15 May. Forms for these scholarships are available from the Scholarships Office, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch 8020, and from the University web site in March and August.
