PhD Position to study the Nature of Interactions between Biomolecules andNanomaterialsBiomolecular and Materials Interface Research GroupSchool of Biomedical & Natural Sciences
An externally funded PhD position is available immediately within the Schoolof Biomedical & Natural Sciences, Nottingham Trent University. You will jointhe Biomolecular and Materials Interface Research Group to work on a projectaimed at increasing our understanding of how peptides interact with specificnano-structured mineral surfaces.
The project is interdisciplinary in nature and will involve the *synthesisof materials and their characterisation, experimental studies of peptidebinding as well as molecular modelling studies of defined surfaces, peptidesand studies of their molecular level interactions*. The appointed studentwill work alongside Dr Patwardhan, a Postdoctoral scientist in the teamworking on the same project. The PhD studentship would suit a highly motivated person with interest inboth inorganic materials chemistry and the structural chemistry ofbiomolecules. The project offers an excellent opportunity for candidates tolearn and contribute to the emerging area of “*nanobiotechnology*”. Entryrequirement: a first class or upper second class UK MChem/MSci Honoursdegree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a related physical sciencediscipline. The minimum English language proficiency requirement is IELTS6.5 or TOEFL 550/CBTOEFL 220 for candidates who have not undertaken a Higherdegree in the UK.
The studentship offers a bursary of £12,000 (tax free) per annum for threeyears and Home/EU student fees. Applications from overseas students arewelcome, but a successful candidate would be responsible for paying thedifference between overseas and home student fees. (Fees for 2005/2006:£3,101 for Home/EU students and £8,950 for overseas students. Fees for2006/2007: £3,168 for Home/EU students and £9,250 for overseas students).
