University of Essex Scholarships support talented postgraduatestudents, particularly PhD students, to study at the University.

The Scholarships are awarded annually by departments and centres whoidentify eligible students.

In 2005-2006 Scholarships worth £650,000 were distributed. Funds arenow available to support students applying to join the university inOctober 2006.

The awards are for up to three years and are designed for students whowould be unable to take up a place without them. They are available toUK, EU and international students.

To be eligible to be considered for a University of Essex Scholarshipyou must have applied for admission as a postgraduate student at theUniversity. Departments have their own criteria for the award ofScholarships and you should visit the department’s web pages forfurther information. Applicants need to demonstrate their financialneed and that they have applied for support from other sources, suchas from the Research Councils.

The value of the Scholarship varies and is determined by thedepartment. When a Scholarship is awarded it is deducted against thetuition fees payable. Any balance is then paid in termly instalmentsto the student. Depending on the size of the Scholarship awarded, itmay be necessary for the student to make a contribution to theirtuition fees.

International students who have an ORSAS award will be provided with asupplementary University of Essex Scholarship so that the full cost oftheir tuition fees is covered.
