UK: PhD Studentships in Transport Risk Management

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships in Transport Risk Management, funded by the Lloyd's RegisterEducational Trust and located in theCentre for Transport Studies in the Department of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering. The students will be supervised Professor Andrew Evans, Lloyd'sRegister Professor of Transport Risk Management, possibly jointly with othermembers of the Centre, depending on their research topic.
The students are expected to work in the field of risk management in any mode of transport. Students may propose theirown topic within this field or work on one of the following topics: criteria for the adoption ofsafety measures; analysis ofaccident precursors as indicators of safety risk; comparisons of safetymanagement in railways and aviation; effectiveness of railway train protection systems; roadsafety, especially in relation to the safety of other modes.
The studentships comprise a bursary for three years, initially at £14,000 per year, together with College fees at thehome/EU rate. In the case of exceptionally well qualified and motivated candidates from outsidethe EU, consideration maybe given to covering all or part of the full College fee.
The Centre for Transport studies undertakes research across a broad range oftransport related topics including safety, railway operations and management,air transport, transport and the environment, transport policy and regulation,transport operations, logistics, technology, and transport demand modelling.Further information can be found on the Centre's website at http://www.imperial.ac.uk/cts
Applicants for the studentships should have or expect to obtain a first or uppersecond class honours degree or equivalent, in a relevant quantitative discipline(for example, Engineering, the Physical Sciences, Environmental Science,Mathematics, Statistics, Computing, Economics). A Master's degree in a relevantsubject may be advantageous but is not essential.
