UK: PhD Studentships in Computational Mechanics, Swansea University

Over the last 30 years Swansea University has been at the forefront of international research in the area of computational engineering. Engineers at Swansea have pioneered the development of numerical techniques, such as the finite element method and associated computational procedures, that have enabled the solution of many complex engineering problems. Originally, the activities in this field were led by the Civil Engineering Department, which has consistently achieved the highest rating in all the Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) carried out to date.

To strengthen this research excellence, and to broaden its application to other areas of engineering, the Civil and Computational Engineering Centre has been formed by including academic staff and researchers from other engineering disciplines who are also active in computational or applied mechanics. The resulting group of researchers represents an unrivalled concentration of knowledge and expertise in this field. Moreover, the Centre has utilised an award of GBP 3m from the Science Research Infrastructure Fund (SRIF) to provide state-of-the-art research facilities.

Description: Applications are invited for two PhD studentships, to work within the Research Centre. The applicants’ research interest should be in the field of computational mechanics and should be related to any of the established research theme in the centre. These scholarships are funded by EPSRC, and details can be found at:

We are looking for Masters or Bachelor students with a first-class honours or a good 2.1 degree in a suitable engineering, mathematical or scientific discipline. The studentships are available for up to 3.5 years of study. UK residents are eligible for a full studentship which includes a stipend of GBP 12,500 per year (First class student GBP 14.000) and home/EU tuition fees of GBP 3,168. EU residents are only eligible for the home/EU tuition fees of GBP 3,168.
