PhD Research Studentship Trafficking Of Virus Proteins: Interactions With The Host Cell Cytoskeleton And Secretory Pathway School of Biological and Molecular Sciences

A 3-year research studentship is available from Sept/Oct 2006 in the Insect Virus Research Group at Oxford Brookes University, under the supervision of Professor Linda King. Applications are invited from well-qualified graduates in the Biological Sciences (2i minimum) and who have an interest in virology and the interactions of viruses with their host cells. The studentship is bursary funded.

This project builds upon the work of previous students and researchers in the lab and will investigate the way in which virus proteins and nucleocapsids move towards the site of assembly and budding at the plasma membrane. In particular, the role of the secretory pathway and the host cell cytoskeleton in these processes will be investigated. The student will gain training in state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, including confocal and electron microscopy, as well as a variety of cell culture, virological and molecular techniques. The student will also have the opportunity to gain experience of making recombinant baculoviruses to express fluorescently-tagged viral proteins for real-time and time-lapse confocal microscopy.

The student will join an active and enthusiastic team and will be encouraged to participate in School-wide and University generic training programmes as well as joining relevant scientific societies. Students participate in lab meetings, give regular presentations and are given the opportunity to attend and present their work at National and International conferences and symposia.
