UK: PhD Studentships in Advanced Telecommunications, University of Wales, Swansea

PhD Studentships Institute of Advanced Telecommunications

The Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT) is a fast-growing Research Institute established in 2005, partly-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, through the Welsh Assembly Government. IAT scientists conduct research in several areas of communications, including Optical, Wireless, and Networking. The recently established Agilent
communications test and measurement lab provides excellent facilities for research. For more details, see http://www.swan.ac.uk/iat/

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships, to work with Prof. Michel Marhic. The project is to design and implement novel devices based on fibre optic nonlinearities, for application to fibre optic communication systems. The research students will be required to model fibre optic parametric amplifiers (OPAs) using analytical models and/or numerical methods, and to implement key aspects of the designs in the laboratory.

The project is funded by EPSRC, and details can be found at:
http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/E033636/1

We are looking for Masters or Bachelor students with first-class honours or a good 2.1 degree in a suitable engineering, mathematical or scientific discipline. A background in fibre optical communication is desirable. Two studentships are available for 3 years of study.

Full studentships include a stipend of £12,300 per year (current 2006/7 rate) and home/EU tuition fees of £3,168 (Total value of a full studentship is £15,468). International non-EU applicants will be required to supply evidence of sufficient funding to cover other expenses during the period of study.

Please forward a copy of full CV, degree transcripts and contact details of two referees for the attention of:
