On the Threshold of Teaching: Social Capital and TroublesomeKnowledge in the Mentoring of Beginning Teachers

This project will be researching a crucial area of education: theprofessional knowledge and values that are implicit in teaching, andthe various means by which such knowledge and shared concern passfrom experienced practitioners and mentors to postgraduate studentswho are also beginning teachers. While the process of mentoring andthe role of teachers as reflective practitioners has been thesubject of significant research, there is less substantial evidenceon the process of induction and professionalisation into teachingfrom the viewpoint of the beginning teachers who are most centrallyinvolved in this experience. There is also a need to offerconceptual frameworks that may clarify this process for allconcerned in it.

The student will focus either on the process of professionalisationwithin school and university settings and/or on theconceptualisation of these matters. The three year scope of theproject and its data-gathering and analysis across differentnational and international teacher education and mentoring systemswould ensure a positive PhD structure of exploration.
