A research student is required to work on a project co-sponsored by theEPSRC and Bentley Cars. The project aims to develop an explicit tyre designprocess, in order to achieve a better match between custom designed tyresand the target vehicle. This process will be based on the simulation of thevehicle’s behaviour in conjunction with multi-parameter constrainedoptimisation. Results will be verified experimentally.

The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of the developmentof the tyre design process, including simulation, optimisation andexperimental verification of the results. He/she will also spend 3 months atBentley’s headquarters in UK and will travel frequently to Europe, to meetwith tyre manufacturers. The successful completion of the work will lead tothe award of a PhD degree.

Applicants should have a good honours degree in Mechanical/Automotiveengineering. A postgraduate degree, knowledge of vehicle dynamics and ADAMS- MATLAB software packages would be most desirable.
