UK: PhD Studentship in Risk, Technology and Environmental Governance


Applications are invited for a full-timePhD studentship based at the University of Liverpool Management School.  The successful applicant will work under thesupervision of Professor Alan Irwin and Dr. Kevin Jones.  The studentship includes tuition (at home/EUrates), maintenance of £12,000 per year, as well as research related costs.

This is a unique and prestigious researchopportunity being offered in conjunction with the UK'sDepartment for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).  Following an initial training period, the successfulcandidate will be invited to conduct a programme of research, within Defra'sClimate, Energy and Environmental Risk Directorate (CEER).

CEER is responsible for a variety ofimportant, contentious and publicized environmental risk areas.  This includes the development of policy in relationto chemical hazards, the control of radioactive substances, climate change, andthe potential hazards associated with novel technologies, such as biotechnologyand nanotechnology. With Defra's support the student will be provided uncommonaccess to the policy contexts, expertise, and people involved in generating theUK's environmental policy and risk regulation.  Moreover, where appropriate, the student willbe invited to work alongside policy-makers in developing best-practice in theseareas.  Key topics to be addressed include:

1.      The role of knowledge, science and expertise in policy-making.

2       Trust andlegitimacy in managing risk and generating environmental policy.

3.  Thedevelopment of engagement (both stakeholder and wider public consultation) practiceswithin the Department.

Applicants should have a first, or 2:1honours degree (or equivalent), and preference will be given to those with aMasters degree in a relevant field of study. Previous academic experience in science and technology studies, risk andenvironmental sociology, or public

policy would be beneficial to a candidate,as would work experience in a policy-related capacity.

Applications should include a CV, astatement of interest (500 words) and the names of two academic references.  The statement of interest must outline theapplicant's interest in the research topic, as well as how a research programmemight be developed in this context.
