UK: PhD Studentship in Railway Safety Risk Research Project The University of Birmingham
This 3-year fully funded studentship is available from 1st August2006. The research will investigate current railway safety riskassessment techniques, develop safety and risk models to facilitaterailway safety analysis using fuzzy reasoning and analytical hierarchyprocess (AHP) methods, develop advanced procedures of rail design andmaintenance to minimise risks, determine the accuracy of the safetyanalysis methodology and determine if there are significant benefitsto be gained. A software railway safety predication tool will bedeveloped in this research. Therefore, potential candidates with aminimum 2:1 class in Engineering/Computer Science disciplines and goodcomputer programming and software development skills (Visual C/C++)are strongly encouraged to apply.
This research is being supported by London Underground Ltd, Tube LinesLtd and Metronet SSL and the student will spend some time at thecompany for safety risk data and information collection as part of theresearch. The study is under the supervision of Dr Min An andProfessor Chris Baker.
The studentship is open to UK and overseas students and includestuition fees plus £9,000 (tax free) maintenance paid per year forthree years. The successful candidate will work in a team with otherstudents and research fellows from Birmingham and elsewhere.
