PhD Studentship The quality of the assessment of the side effects ofantipsychotic medication in clinical psychiatric practice, Department of Psychological Medicine

Imperial College is ranked in the top ten universities of the world,according to the 2006 Times Higher Education Supplement league tables.

A three-year, full-time PhD studentship is available in the Department ofPsychological Medicine, Division of Neuroscience and Mental Health, toinvestigate the quality of the assessment of side effects of antipsychoticmedication in clinical psychiatric practice. The key aims of the projectwill be to conduct a systematic review of the relevant literature in respectof the assessment of antipsychotic side effects, addressing issues includingthe range and clinical utility of rating scales used, and the value ofsystematic assessment. In addition, qualitative work will explore currentclinical practice around the monitoring and management of antipsychotic sideeffects.

The research will be carried out in collaboration with the nationalPrescribing Observatory for Mental Health (POMH-UK), under the supervisionof Professor Thomas Barnes, Department of Psychological Medicine. It will bebased at the Charing Cross Campus. The current stipend is £15,500 per annumin the first year, rising in years two and three, with fees paid (equivalentto the home/ EU full-time fee level).

Applicants should have or expect to be awarded a First class or Upper Secondclass honours degree in a relevant health-related discipline.
