UK: PhD Studentship in Neural Mechanisms of Dynamic Object Recognition, School of Biology and Psychology, Newcastle University

The Division of Psychology at Newcastle University is one of the premier Psychology groupings in the UK, having scored the highest ratings in both research (RAE 2001: 5*) and teaching (QAA Subject Review 24/24 points). Applications are now invited for a PhD studentship in Neural Mechanisms of Dynamic Object Recognition.

The successful candidate will join the Human Perception and Cognition Group within a lively and very friendly environment based at the Henry Wellcome Building. He or she will be supervised by Dr Quoc Vuong, a cognitive psychologist currently investigating the neural mechanisms involved in visual object recognition using a combination of psychophysics and functional brain imaging. He is also interested in testing how properties of the stimulus drive perception and neural activities using computer-vision techniques and image analyses.

Person Specification
Ideally, the candidate will have a strong interest in vision and some experience in brain imaging, programming or computer vision, either as part of a Masters project or a final year undergraduate project. However, this previous experience is not a restriction for a suitable candidate. The studentship is open to UK and EU applicants who have a first-class or upper-second-class Honours degree (or equivalent) or a Masters degree (or equivalent). Due to funding criteria, this studentship is not avaialble to international students. Ideally, we would like the candidate to be able to start by 6 July 2007 at the latest.

Value of the Award
The studentship is for three years and includes a stipend starting at £12,300 per annum, as well as tuition fees for a UK/EU student (approximately £3,170 per annum).

Further Information
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Quoc Vuong by telephone, +44 (0)191 222 6183, or by e-mail, q.c.vuong@ncl.ac.uk More information about the project and postgraduate study can be found on Dr Vuong’s web page.
