UK: PhD Studentship in Computer Vision at Digital Image Research Centre, Kingston University


We wish to appoint a PhD student to conduct research on the next generationof video surveillance systems. The work will be funded by BARCO, a majorglobal manufacturer of video visualisation systems (subject to finalcontract). The project will address the need for robustness in objectclassification, tracking and situation assessment for large distributedsurveillance applications. In particular it will deal with the investigationand evaluation of multi-camera tracking of heterogeneous objects. You willwork in close collaboration with a top industrial R&D department. Theproject will involve regular travelling to BARCO labs in Belgium.

Applicants must have a first degree (minimum 2i or equivalent) in ComputerScience, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline. Previousexperience of digital signal processing or computer vision is desirable.

This is a three year studentship (reviewed annually) open to EU and non-EUcitizens. The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend of around£12,500 plus normal fees (non-EU citizens will be eligible to receive up toan additional £4,000 p.a. to help them pay the difference between home andoverseas fees, so they will be expected to make a personal contribution of£2,000 p.a. towards fees). At the end of the three year period you will beexpected to have written the Doctorate thesis.

With more than about 17,000 students, Kingston University is now one of thelargest universities in southern England. The Digital Imaging ResearchCentre ( http://dircweb.king.ac.uk/dirc/home.htm) integrates relevantcomputer vision and graphics research across the University and is currentlycomposed of 16 academic members, 6 research associates and 15 researchstudents. DIRC expertise includes visual surveillance, medical imaging andambient intelligence. The work in visual surveillance is recognisednationally and internationally.
