PhD Studentship
Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics
School of Engineering Sciences
University of Southampton
Ref no: 05R0843
A PhD studentship is now available within the Aerodynamics and FlightMechanics Research Group, School of Engineering Sciences (SES), whichwill fully cover University tuition fees (at EU/UK level**) and providea tax-free bursary of £12,300 per year, rising annually in line withthe UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a three-year duration.
** EU/UK fees are £3168 p.a. (subject to increase),and the overseas fee is £12,700 (subject to increase). Thereforeoverseas applicants will need to find the fees difference of £9532.
This is an opportunity for a student to undertake PhD thesis researchin aerodynamics/ computational aeroacoustics in a project related toairframe noise and aerodynamics during approach. We aim to establish anaerodynamic and aeroacoustic model of an important component of a largecivil aircraft. The project involves mainly computational modelling, and the student will have the opportunity to use/develop advancedpredictive methods based on computational fluid dynamics to simulateaerodynamics, aeroacoustics and turbulent flows associated with civilaircraft. He/she will explore relevant problems within the aerospaceindustry.
The PhD studentship is provided by EPSRC. The project is supported byAirbus, who will provide funding and focus to the project, and regularmeetings will be held with Airbus UK.
SES is a top 5* rated research school with an international reputation. The successful candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students in the areas of computationalaeroacoustics, engine noise and airframe noise, race car aerodynamicsand flow control.
The School is a diverse community which is committed to creating aninclusive working and learning environment in which all individuals areequally treated and valued, and can achieve their potential. The Schoolconsiders all studentship applications in relation to academic criteriaand regardless of the individual's race, gender, or belief.
Entry requirements: The studentship is available to candidates with theequivalent of a first class or upper second class degree inmathematics, aeronautics and engineering disciplines. The studentshipis at the standard EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences ResearchCouncil) rate, commencing on 1 October 2006.
