UK: MPhil Studentship in Image Analysis using Beamlets
The University of York MPhil Studentship
Image Analysis using Beamlets
Department of Computer Science
Closing date for applications: 14 November 2005
An MPhil studentship funded by QinetiQ is available within the AdvancedComputer Architecture Group (ACAG) of the Department of ComputerScience at the University of York, UK.
The project is concerned with developing the use of beamlets (relatedto wavelets) in the detection and identification of complextime-varying traces in noisy, dynamically-generated images. Applicantswill need to have a good honours degree in Computer Science, ElectronicEngineering, Mathematics, Physics or other related areas. A strongcomputing and programming background is essential.
The Department of Computer Science was rated 6* at the last RAE(research quality assessment). Whilst there is extensive expertise inmany branches of computing, we emphasise multi-disciplinary approachesto research so no firm dividing lines are drawn between the variousstrands of the subject.
The ACA Group brings together the three areas of neural networks, computer vision and advanced architectures, and it has currently around30 members. Detailed information about the group and its research areasis available online at http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/research/. Enquiriesabout the project can be
directed to Dr Simon O'Keefe, email: sok@cs.york.ac.uk.
The funding is currently for two years, and covers a fee waiver at theUK/EU rate and a tax-free stipend. The studentship is open to UK, EUand overseas students; any successful overseas candidate would have tofind the balance of the overseas fees from another source. Acceptancewill be subject to security checks. The successful applicant may beable to extend their registration to complete a PhD after the initialperiod of funding.
