UK: ESRC (RELU) funded PhD Studentship, Sustainability and animal welfare

This studentship is available under the Joint Research Council (ESRC, NERC, BBSRC) Rural Economy & Land Use (RELU) Programme. It is linked to RELU project RES 224-25-0041 Eating Biodiversity: an investigation into the links between quality food production and biodiversity protection, led by Professor Henry Buller at the Department of Geography, University of Exeter, who will be lead supervisor. The successful applicant will identify, explore and analyse the incorporation of farm animal welfare into rationales, policies and practices of rural sustainability and will investigate the articulation of animal welfare arguments, regulations, schemes and mechanisms with sustainability objectives. Candidates should possess a good degree in Sociology or Geography or cognate discipline and must have an ESRC recognised masters qualification. Existing scientific knowledge on animal welfare issues, sustainability and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary field will be essential. Applicants, under ESRC regulations, must prove that they have 'a relevant connection with the United Kingdom'. Ideally candidates should be available to start immediately and no later than October 2005.

This studentship is eligible for the standard ESRC maintenance grant (currently £12,000 per annum) as well as full payment of all tuition fees.
