Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology Improving theassessment of the health aspects of odour exposure within industrialconurbations and industry sectorsSchool of Engineering
The EngD is a 4-year postgraduate studentship conducting research on thesponsor’s project whilst based at the sponsor’s premises. It is EPSRC’s*premier research qualification and the programme includes 15 short coursesof 1 week’s duration, held at the University. The EngD Research Engineerappointed will receive a stipend in excess of £18,000 funded by EPSRC* andthe sponsor. Stipends are tax free.
A studentship is available with the Chemical Hazards & Poisons Division(London) of the Health Protection Agency. The successful candidate willcommence their EngD in March 2007. The deadline for applications is *12January 2007* and interviews will be held later that month.
The Research Engineer will be based with Chemical Hazards & Poisons Division(London) of the Health Protection Agency in Holborn, London. The overall aimis to develop methodologies for the determination of population exposure tochemicals involved in, or associated with, odour complaints. The researchwill include analysis of both monitoring and modelling techniques throughcase studies and will involve working closely with local authorities whodeal with this topic as a regulatory nuisance issue. This will lead to newapproaches to community level hazard assessment in relation to odour.
We are looking for a suitably qualified and well-rounded graduate who canconduct research and meet demanding deadlines whilst working in a busyorganisation. The ideal candidate will be a broad, innovative thinker withgood communication skills and an outgoing personality.
In terms of academic qualifications, applicants will need to have a firstdegree (first class or upper second only) or MSc, which is likely to be inone of main engineering or science disciplines. A willingness to developknowledge in the following specialist areas will be essential: atmosphericdispersion, the use of GIS, toxicology, public health, environmental scienceand epidemiology will be essential.
