UK: Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards 2006

The Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) are designed to attract high quality research studentsfrom India, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, South Africa, Russia and the developingworld to highly rated UK research environments including the University ofEdinburgh.
The scholarships are open to nationals of one of the eligiblecountries undertaking a PhD research degree, and are open to topquality science, engineering, medicine, social science and technology students. Subject to satisfactory progress, thescholarships are tenable for up tofour years and will cover the full overseas tuition fee plus a maintenanceallowance of £12,300 per year.
The University of Edinburgh has been allocated 4 awards forthe 2006-2007 academic session which will be sponsored as follows:
- 3 awards from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) which will be paired with Shell. These awards must be used to support projects in the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or Geosciences.
- 1 award from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) which will be paired with BP
Eligibility
Applicants must be a national of one of the eligiblecountries and must have been offered admission toa full-time MPhil/PhD research programme of study. They must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential.
The Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards are intended to support new PhDstudents, and the majority of students applying for DHPA funding are expectednot to have started their PhD studies. However, it is recognised that somestudents may have commenced their PhD studies with the intention of applying forscholarships and funding for the start of the following session. Applicants whohave already commenced their PhD studies are eligible to apply for a DHPAprovided that they did not commence their PhD degree before 1 April 2005. DorothyHodgkin Postgraduate Awards cannot be held concurrently with an ORS award.
The scholarships are available in Schools rated 5 or 5* in the 2001 RAE exercise. Based on this year's sponsor pairings, the following Schools at the University of Edinburgh are eligible to participate. Please read carefully the above details on the pairings of the four awards available:

- Anthropology within the School of Social and Political Studies
- Biological Sciences within the School of Biological Sciences
- School of Chemistry
- Civil Engineering within the School of Engineering and Electronics
- Earth Sciences within the School of Geosciences
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering within the School of Engineering and Electronics
- Geography within the School of Geosciences
- School of Clinical Sciences and Community Health
- School of Informatics
- Linguistics within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences
- School of Mathematics
- School of Physics
- Psychology within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences
- Sociology within the School of Social and Political Studies

Application Procedure
Applicants must apply for the awards through theUniversity of Edinburgh. In order to assist you with the preparation of yourDorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award application form, you should contact the School at theUniversity of Edinburgh in which you would like to study and clarify with themyour proposed research project.

Applicants should submit a scholarship application form, together with a copy of your degreetranscript and two academic references. The first reference should be from someone with knowledge of yourfirst degree or Masters, and the second one from your future PhD supervisor at theUniversity of Edinburgh who should state within your reference whether he/shehas had any contact with any of the five industrial sponsors. Your scholarshipapplication should be received by the Scholarships and Student Finance Officeby the closing date of 3 April 2006 in order to beconsidered for the scholarship.
Selection Procedures
Selection between candidates will take place in late April 2006 and will basedon the quality of the candidates; the subject area of research; and the knownsponsors. The winners of the scholarship will be announced in early May 2006.
