PhD studentship at School of Engineering Sciences
ACSIAN/ funded PhD studentship
An exciting opportunity exists for a student to undertake PhD sponsoredby ACSIAN, a recent spin-out company from the University.
ACSIAN has developed a radically new software product that willdramatically alter the way organizations undertake large, complexprojects. The software allows the large number of complex interactionswithin an organization to be modeled, analyzed and optimized tominimize costs and reduce project risks.
The PhD studentship will provide good opportunities to work with ourinitial customer who is one of the largest aerospace companies in theworld.
There are a number of possible areas of research and this would dependsomewhat on the interests, skills and background of the successfulcandidate. However, some of the areas identified by ACSIAN include;parallel processing for the solution of very large network problems, the design of efficient algorithms, and stochastic analysis of networks.
The studentship is available to someone with a first class degree inmathematics or computer science. Clearly a significant part of theresearch will involve computing therefore the successful candidate musthave an interest and strong skills in computation and problemrepresentation paradigms. The candidate must be highly proficient inthe use of Java Technology and OO programming. Knowledge of theNetbeans Platform and IDE will be considered an advantage. Ideally thecandidate should also have experience in the design and deployment ofweb services and discrete-event systems.
The studentship is at the standard EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) bursary rate.
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the University ofSouthampton achieved the highest possible ratings of 5 and 5* status in24 of its 34 units of assessment. This level of Research Excellence hasearned us eighth place in The Sunday Times' University League Table forresearch standards.
SES has the very best Grade 5* research assessment grading, and an international research reputation.
The successful candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students in the areas of ComputationalEngineering, Design and Optimization. This group has a long termresearch relationship with Rolls-Royce and BAE systems and hosts theUniversity Technology Partnership in Design.
