TWAS-S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Postgraduate Fellowships in Physical Sciences
TWAS and the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences,Kolkata, India have agreed to offer five fellowships annually to youngforeign scientists from developing countries who wish to pursueresearch leading towards a Ph.D in physical sciences.
Programme Details
- The fellowships, tenable at the S.N. Bose National Centrefor Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India, will be awarded to young studentsfrom developing countries to enable them to pursue studies leadingtowards a Ph.D degree in physical sciences.
- Admission tothe Ph.D programme at the S.N. Bose National Centre will depend on thesuccessful completion of course work (about one year's duration).
- Successfulcandidates will be provided with an S.N. Bose National Centre "JuniorResearch Fellowship" starting from the first year, amounting to Rs8,000.00 per month as well as free on-campus accommodation. In theevent that accommodation on campus is not available, an additionalamount of Rs. 2,400.00 will be paid towards house rent. The Centre mayalso provide travel expenses for participation in conferences, seminarsetc., on a case-by-case basis.
- TWAS will cover thecost of international air travel (economy class and shortest route) aswell as other expenses incurred in connection with the travel to Indiaand back home.
Research Areas carried out at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences
- Electronic structure and physics of materials
- Soft condensed matter, complex systems and statistical physics
- High energy physics and mathematical physics
- Optics, mesoscopic phenomena and chemical physics
- Astrophysics
- Experimentalphysics: Magnetism, in particular manganites, Birkhaussen effect,Mössbauer spectroscopy, superconductivity, mechanical stress-strainrelaxation, dielectric spectroscopy in the nano and pico time scales,as well as noise measurements in terms of resistance fluctuationspectroscopy.
- Nano science and technology: Synthesis ofnano materials; physical measurements using scaling probe microscopy;mesoscopic phenomena; electronic structure and modelling;nanolithography; nanobiophysics.
- Theoretical chemistry:Density functional theory, quantum fluid dynamics and applications;atoms/molecules under intense or super-intense laser fields;atoms/molecules under strong magnetic fields; quantum chaos;computational quantum chemistry (novel molecules, nanoclusters,biomolecules, drug-DNA interaction modelling); theoretical spectroscopyand relaxation phenomena; simulation studies and non-equilibriumthermodynamics.
Eligibility
Candidates for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
- be a maximum age of 30 years on 31 December of the application year;
- be nationals of a developing country (other than India) and be employed at a university or research institution there;
