The Netherlands: The 2007 Huygens Scholarship Programme (HSP) for International Students (Second Round)


The Huygens Scholarship Programme (HSP) is open to students from all countries of the world. It is aimed at excellent students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

Important: the information provided below relates only to the second, additional round of applications in 2007 for the HSP Huygens Programme.

3.3 million euros
The Dutch Minister for Education, Culture and Science has made an extra 3.3 million euros available for international students coming to the Netherlands under the Huygens programme. Applications for HSP for the 2007-2008 academic year must be received by Nuffic by September 15th 2007 at the latest.

HSP Huygens Programme
The prestigious HSP Huygens programme is open to excellent students from all countries of the world. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

Applications for the 2007-2008 academic year must be sent to Nuffic before 15 September 2007 at the latest. The starting date of the HSP scholarship is January 1st, 2008. Once we receive your application, we will send a confirmation via email. Because of the volume of applications, it may be some time before you hear from us.

Requirements for eligibility
If you want to take part in the HSP Huygens programme, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are an excellent student: you have obtained excellent results in all your previous studies and you are in the top 10% of students in your study or research programme
  • You must have already attended a programme of education (e.g. high school or above) in your home country
  • The Dutch study programme should be on the CROHO list.
  • Your study in the Netherlands should be in the final phase of your bachelor’s studies, or during your master’s studies, and must be used primarily to earn a degree at the Dutch
    institution.
  • At the start of the second semester (1 January) in which you study in the Netherlands, you must be no older than 35 years of age.
  • You are now studying abroad and you want to start studying in the Netherlands in the
    second semester (January-February) of the 2007-2008 academic year; or
  • You are already studying in the Netherlands and you want to continue studying in the
    Netherlands in the second semester(January-February) of the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • Scholarships are only awarded for studies lasting at least 6 months, but no longer than 24 months.
  • Your studies/research in the Netherlands must constitute a deepening and broadening of your previous studies in your home country.
  • You must be proficient in the language of instruction of your chosen study or research
    programme.
  • If you are already a graduate, you must have graduated less than two years ago.

Scholarship outline
Scholarships are awarded for a period of no less than six months and no more than 24 months.
They include the following components:

  • a monthly allowance of € 900 euros (this includes a standard contribution towards
    healthcare insurance)
  • a generous reimbursement of tuition fees or a contribution towards the costs of the PhD thesis, as estimated in the research proposal
  • visa fees (standard contribution)
  • a one-off payment towards international travel costs (standard contribution based on
    country of origin)

Application procedure
If you want to apply for a scholarship, you must first obtain a HSP Huygens nomination letter from the Dutch host institution for your chosen study or research programme.

  • First of all, you are an excellent student
  • You have to apply for admission to a study or research programme
  • When you apply for admission to a programme in the Netherlands, you should indicate
    that your study performance is excellent and that you wish to be nominated for the
    prestigious HSP Huygens programme.
  • Important! The admission criteria for the programme at the Dutch host institution will differ from the requirements that the selection committee adheres to when selecting academically excellent students for the HSP Huygens programme. See the section entitled
    Requirements for eligibility elsewhere on this website.
  • If the Dutch institution does not agree with your candidacy for a HSP Huygens scholarship, they will not provide you with a HSP Huygens nomination letter. This means that you cannot apply for a HSP Huygens scholarship. You can explore other ways of funding to finance your studies or research activities in the Netherlands, e.g. at www.grantfinder.nl.
  • If the Dutch institution agrees with your candidacy for a HSP Huygens scholarship, they will send you a HSP Huygens nomination letter.
