The Netherlands: PhD Studentship in Massively Parallel Micro and Nano-structures in Polymers

Closing date: March 31, 2006

The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancyPhD-student “ Massively parallel micro and nano-structures in polymers “ (V35.328)at Micro- and Nano- scale Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering considers as the core of their activities design, realization and analysis of new products, processes and materials. Besides the basis of (solid and fluid) mechanics, materials, control and thermodynamics, parts of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing science are important supporting tools. The field is explored by a combination of modeling using fundamental concepts and applied engineering and technology. Automotive Engineering Science and Micro- & Nano-Scale Engineering are important departemental themes. The Mechanical Engineering Department comprises about 950 students and 250 staff members.

Within the division on Computational and Experimental Mechanics a new research group for Micro- and Nano- scale engineering is in the process of being established. Although we have a broad interest for any relevant technology that can solve micro- and nano-engineering problems, we have special interest in non-silicon-based systems ( like polymer MEMS, non-lithographic approaches). The activities in this group will focus on:

  • Micro- and nano- fabrication;
  • Fluidics, sensors and actuators;
  • System integration.

Tasks
As PhD-student “ Massively parallel micro and nano-structures in polymers “ you will fulfill the following activities:The successful candidate will work in the field of design and fabrication of massively parallel micro and nano-structures in polymers. Targeted applications will be bio-chips, polymer based MEMS, systems on a foil, large array actuators. Technologies that will be used and further developed are micro injection moulding and micro/nano-embossing. The limits of small dimensions and structures will be explored. Process models will be developed and compared with experimental results. A strong emphasis will be on the combination of functional design and suitable fabrication processes. It is expected this project will run in cooperation with industrial partners and other research institutes.

Requirements
We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • Master in mechanical engineering, micro-engineering or applied physics. Also students who are in the final stage of their study are invited to react.
  • A strong interest in both device and process development.
  • Interest in applied multidisciplinary research.
  • Good communication skills in English

Appointment and Salary

  • A full-time employment for 4 years, with an intermediate evaluation after 1 year.
  • A salary of € 1813 per month (gross) in the first year, increasing to € 2283 per month (gross) in the fourth year.
  • Support with your personal development and career planning.
  • Attractive secondary labour conditions (among others: a compensation of € 1815 for the production of the Ph.D. thesis).
