PhD Student Emotion detection by Sound Analysis ‘The Dutch Companion’, is the Dutch part of a European project which develops and demonstrate an autonomous cognitive system that integrates perception, reasoning, and learning. The department of Artificial Intelligence contributes to this project through the development of sound recognition technology for household sounds and human emotions. These techniques are to be demonstrated in innovative man-machine interfaces.
The main work focuses on:
- Adapting existing sound detection and recognition technology (based on Continuity Preserving Signal Processing) for developing techniques to provide a user interface with emotional intelligence in terms of (a) emotional interpretation of its user’s emotional states based on speech/prosody evaluation, and (b) strategies to detect important changes in the (acoustic) environment that might lead to a change of behaviour and/or a general emotion inspired response.
- Interfacing the developed technology with the results of other project partners in a complex European setting.
- Developing convincing demonstrators of the newly developed technology.
