The Netherlands: PhD Student Positions in Measuring and Modelling Electromagnetic Brain Activity, Radboud University Nijmegen

The Measuring and Modelling Electromagnetic Brain Activity Group at the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Nijmegen (NL) seeks an outstanding PhD-student for a project investigating the relationship between human working and long-term memory. For several decades it has been debated in the cognitive psychology community whether long-term memory operations require the cooperation of the working (short-term) memory system. Of particular interest is how brain oscillations are involved in this cooperation. We will address this question using state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques and novel analysis methods. The techniques to be used are MEG, to characterize the temporal dynamics of working memory maintenance, and fMRI, to characterize the brain areas engaged. This multidisciplinary project is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Science Research (NWO).

Requirements
We encourage applicants with a background in cognitive psychology or physiology background to apply , but also applicants from other disciplines if they want to contribute to an interdisciplinary research project centered on functional neuroimaging in humans. Backgrounds of interest include cognitive neuroscience, physiology and computer science.

Organization
The mission of the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (FCDC) is to conduct cutting-edge fundamental and applied research in cognitive neuroscience (i.e. human and animal cognition, as viewed from the perspective of the brain). The FCDC houses a 275-channel MEG system, TMS, high-density EEG , 1.5T and 3T MRI systems.

Much of the rapid progress in this field is being driven by the development of complex neuro-imaging techniques for measuring activity in the human brain an area in which the FCDC plays a leading role. The research themes of the FCDC cover central cognitive functions, such as perception, action, attention, memory, language, learning and plasticity. The aim is to unravel these complex cognitive functions and discover how they are represented in the brain. This is done by identifying the networks of brain areas that are vital to each of these functions.
