Located within one of the Netherlands oldest and largestuniversities, Utrecht University’s Faculty of Arts and theHumanities/Arts has nineteen degree programs in the languages andletters of Europe and the Middle-East, the various arts and media, andin history. Research programs are organized into two institutes withextensive national and international links. Special attention is paid tointerdisciplinary collaboration, the use of new media, and the qualityof teaching. The Faculty is housed in the historic city center andenjoys excellent facilities.
Over 300 researchers are employed by the Onderzoekinstituut voorGeschiedenis en Cultuur (Research Institute for History and Culture):OGC. The research of OGC is divided into eleven groups: classicalantiquity, medieval culture, cultural history, media studies, musichistory, art history, (early) modern literature, eastern studies,international political history, socio-economic history and women’sstudies. Some of this research, namely the contract research, is done onbehalf of third parties. Internationalisation is a high priority withinthe OGC. It has exchange contracts with a number of foreign universitiesincluding the prestigious UCLA in the United States.

Job description:
The PhD positions are open to any of the research groups mentionedin the introduction above. To obtain a PhD degree in one of the institute’s areas of researchyou will work under the guidance of a supervisor on a scientificresearch project. In addition to the research component which aims atcompletion of the doctoral dissertation within four years, the programmehas an educational component comprising curricular and extra-curriculartraining activities. To prepare yourself for your doctoral dissertationyou will take part in a study programme of the National ResearchInstitute your project is connected to. At the start of the graduateprogramme a study plan will be drafted.
Qualifications:
We are looking for enthusiastic and inventive individuals for thesePhD positions. Applicants should have a master’s degree in a relevantscientific field.
Terms of employment:
We offer two PhD positions (0,8 fte) with a one year contractbeginning January 1, 2007. After a positive evaluation this contract canbe extended to a maximum of three more years (a total of four yearsmaximum). This provides graduates with an opportunity to finish theirdoctoral dissertation in four years, funded by the OGC. The PhDstudents, also referred to as doctoral candidates, take courses too. Salary Rising from € 1.933,00 a month during the first year to €2.472,00 in the fourth year on a fulltime basis and we offer solid benefits.
