PhD-student Microbiology/molecular ecologyVacancy number CEME-MM-05100
in the project: ‘Diversification and niche differentiation of N2-fixing microorganisms in a marine microbial mat’ which is subsidized by the Research Council for Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) with financial aid from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Project description:
The project comprises three main objectives. It aims at assessing the function of the diversity of N2-fixing microorganisms in a coastal microbial mat, identify their niches and determine the controlling factors of N2 fixation. In order to achieve these objectives the research will address nitrogenase activity, nitrogenase gene diversity and -expression and diazotroph diversity in a comprehensive way. The research will make use of advanced methodology for the measurement of N2 fixation, stable isotope probing and state-of-the-art molecular biological techniques, including oligonucleotide arrays. The project comprises field work on the green beaches of the North Sea island of Schiermonnikoog as well as laboratory studies on isolated microorganisms. The project collaborates with Prof. J. Zehr of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Requirement:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person with a degree in biology or chemistry and specialized in microbiology, microbial ecology or molecular ecology. Experience with molecular-biological techniques is a prerequisite. We expect that the candidate will successfully complete a PhD-thesis.
