Job description Function title: PhD
The PhD candidate will study the emergence of paths within basicresearch. These paths create irreversibilities, thereby determining thescope for technology adaptations to societal preferences in the laterstages of development. Is it possible to involve external stakeholders,directly or indirectly, in assessing and deciding on the expectationsand visions that guide decision making in the research phase?
For this aim longitudinal studies of nanoelectronic research projectswill be made. The PhD candidate will develop strategies regarding theinvolvement of societal stakeholders in research decision making.
The work will be part of the Technology Assessment flagship of theNanoNed consortium, and the PhD candidate is expected to contribute tothe TA flagship.
Requirements Required education/skills:University Graduate
The PhD candidate will have qualifications both in social science orhumanities as well as in natural science or technology. Particularwelcome are candidates who can show some competence in sociology ofscience and technology or technology assessment. Mastery of the Dutchlanguage is an asset, but not always required.

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) within the DelftUniversity of Technology trains engineers who associate engineeringknowledge with insight into and a feeling for management and societaldecisionmaking. This faculty wants to make an important contribution tothe solution of important, large, complex problems with technical andsocietal components. An interdisciplinary approach of the researchsubjects is highly important here.
The section Technology Dynamics & Sustainable Developmentparticipates in a national program to support the assessment ofnanotechnology developments and their embedment in society, includingeventual societal debates. These studies are partly funded through thenational nanoscience and nanotechnology consortium NanoNed.

Additional conditions of employment:
As a Ph.D. you will be fulltime appointed for a period of four years,at the end of which you must have completed your thesis. The startingsalary is € 2.074 gross. This salary will increase up to € 2.394 in thefourth year.
