Switzerland: PhD Positions at University of Lausanne

The Institut d’Etudes Politiques et Internationales of the Faculté desSciences Sociales et Politique at the University of Lausanne,Switzerland, has an opening for three PhD positions in the framework ofa project on Standards and International Relations: Devolution of Powerin the Global Political Economy, funded by the Swiss National ScienceFoundation (SNF) and directed by Prof. Jean-Christophe Graz.
The project :The project explores the political implications of thegrowing influence of international standards on society, with a specialfocus on the service sector. Current and future developments instandardisation are certain to raise the political, economic and legalsalience of what were for long considered as merely technicalspecifications. In highlighting the underestimated importance of servicestandards in international relations, the project attempts to criticallyquestion the structural power of standardisation within the broadercontext of the globalisation of markets and the role of the state in theeconomy.
Profile : advanced university degree in social sciences, preferably aMaster degree in political science or international relations ;familiarity with the field of international political economy; excellentcommand of English and/or German (for non French-speaking candidates,working knowledge of French).
Positions :The individual research positions concern three researchclusters focused on either sectoral or institutional cases of servicestandards. The successful candidates will work in close collaborationwith the director of the project and the other researchers.

Appointment : The appointment will begin September 1st, 2006, for aperiod of four years. The position carries a gross annual salary inaccordance with the Swiss National Science regulations, and will rangefrom CHF 33’600 to CHF 39’600.
