Sweden: PhD Positions in Nanooptics with A Focus on Biosensor Development, Chalmers University of Technology

PHD-POSITION IN NANO-OPTICS WITH A FOCUS ON BIOSENSOR DEVELOPMENT, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Reference number 2009/84

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development in the area of nano-optics. Using metallic nanostructures, it is now possible to dramatically enhance light matter interactions at the nanoscale using so-called surface plasmon resonances. The structures can, for example, be used as nanoscopic biological sensors for medical diagnostics, but there are probably many more novel applications laying ahead, for example in areas such as metamaterials, solar cells and cancer treatment.

The Division of Bionanophotonics at the Department of Applied Physics, now seeks two new doctoral students in nanooptics.

Job description
This position focuses on development of biosensors based on gold and silver nanostructures. Of particular interest is the possibility to design the particles resonance wavelength through nanolithography and the possibility to specify their interaction with biological structures using surface functionalization.

Direct recruitment will be applied. Send in your application as soon as possible.

The project is conducted in a network that involves several national and international collaborations. The position is financed through Vinnova, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), the Swedish Research Council (VR) and Göran Gustafssons Foundation.

Qualifications
We seek creative and independent candidates with documented analytical capacity, excellent language skills and a particular interest for optical spectroscopy and microscopy.
A suitable background is Master of Science in photonics or engineering physics.

Application procedure

  • The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
  • An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
  • Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letters of recommendation and name of reference persons (optional)

The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.

If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2009/84) must be written on the first page of the application.

Further information
The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licenciate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years.

In order to improve the gender balance at the Department, we welcome in particular applications from female candidates.
