Studentship in Equality

Applications are invited for one studentship beginning in October 2005based in the Social and Policy Research Institute at the University ofUlster. Candidates should hold a first or upper second honours degreein social policy, public policy, politics, sociology or other relevantsocial science discipline. Candidates who have a Masters degree may begiven preference. The successful candidate will enrol on a full-timeprogramme of research studies leading to an award of Doctor ofPhilosophy.

Thestudentship is sponsored by the Equality Commission for NorthernIreland which wishes to encourage research into key aspects of theunderstanding of equality and the development of equality policies ingeneral and in relation to its statutory responsibilities in NorthernIreland.

Thestudentship will be based in the University's Social and PolicyResearch Institute. The Institute comprises staff from the Faculty ofSocial Sciences who span a wide range of disciplines including socialpolicy, public policy, social work, education and politics andinternational relations. The studentship offers the opportunity to joina highly focussed group of researchers with an international reputation.

The studentship will be awarded for a period of up to three years,subject to satisfactory progress. It will comprise fees (at the Homeand EU rate only) and annual stipend of £12,000 with additionalincrements in the second and third years.

The proposed topic must be in the broad area of equality withparticular emphasis on policy. We are particularly interested inproposals which reflect key issues concerning mainstreaming equality inpolicy making or the implications of the consolidation ofanti-discrimination legislation. However any proposals in whichequality issues are situated within the broad context of the EqualityCommission's remit, will be considered.
