Gender & Development Studies (GDS)at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is inviting applications forscholarships for Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Gender andDevelopment Studies with specialization in 'Gender, Environment andDevelopment.'
 
Eligible applicants should have aneducational background in the social sciences or human geography or anyof the natural science disciplines as well as career experience inorganizations working with programs related to natural resourcemanagement or environmental governance for a minimum of three years.They should also be nationals of the following countries: Indonesia,Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, East Timor,Cambodia, Lao PDR, China, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lankaand Bhutan.
 
The scholarship will cover all schoolfees, travel to AIT from country of origin through the most economicalroute available, accommodation and field data collection within thetwenty one (21) - month masters' study program of GDS. It is expectedthat grant awardees will develop their master's thesis exploringvarious themes within the general framework of social and genderanalysis on natural environments in the Asian region and with intendedrelevance to their organizations' objectives, concerns and scope ofwork. Some of these research themes could present (but are not limitedto) fresh perspectives on the following: gender and social effects ofenvironmental degradation on populations (e.g. health; loss of landrights); the degree of participation of women and men indecision-making on management of resources; mobility patterns of womenand men and their effects on rural livelihoods; claim-making onresources and evolving resource conflicts; responses to state-drivenprograms on environmental governance; the effects of global markets onlocal environments and populations, and so on.
 
Interested applicants should submit the following documents to the AIT Admissions Officer:
(a) A completed application form available online at www.ait.ac.th/AIT/admissions/;
(b) A tentative one-page research abstract for the master's thesis;
(c) Attested transcript(s) of previous Bachelor's Degrees;
(d) TOEFEL/IELTS score or evidence of English language proficiency; and
(e) Two (2) recommendation letters
 
Pleaseindicate that you are applying for a Master's Degree in GDS withspecialization in 'Gender, Environment and Development' in yourapplication form for your application to be counted. More generalinformation on admissions procedures is available in the AIT AdmissionsOffice website.
 
For the First Semester intake ofAugust 2005, a maximum of three awards will be granted on the basis ofappropriate career and educational backgrounds as specified above; aresearch abstract with clearly stated objectives and fresh perspectivesoffered to the study of social and gender analysis in natural resourcemanagement; English language proficiency; hold a Bachelor's degree froman institution of recognized standing with above average marks, andtimely submission of all required documents.
 
Thiscompetitive awards program for post-graduate education at AIT is partof the partnership between GDS/AIT and the International DevelopmentResearch Centre (IDRC) Canada and its umbrella program on social and gender analysis in natural resource management in Asia.
