Scholarships and Funding at Law School, UEA, UK


Funding for postgraduate study is available both from UEA and from a number of external schemes. Applicants should note that many award schemes have early closing dates and may require the acceptance of the offer of a place as a condition of eligibility. If you wish to apply for funding, you are therefore strongly advised to apply to the Law School before 1 March in the calendar year of entry. Please indicate in your application that you wish to be considered for an award.

Brief descriptions of some of the major sources of funding appear below. For further details please contact the Law School. Overseas applicants may also wish to contact the UEA International Office.

External Scholarship Schemes

British Council Scholarships

A number of our LLM students receive funding from the British Council. International students should contact their local office of the British Council as the first point of contact for information on funding opportunities within each country. Details of British Council offices are available on its website.

Chevening Scholarships

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British Government offers scholarships under the Chevening programme and other full fellowships to nationals of many countries for study at any level. Contact the British Council offices in your country for details. You should apply to the British Embassy/High Commission or the British Council in the country of which you are a citizen. Some scholarships are jointly funded with leading industrial and commercial firms and grant-giving foundations. These are often advertised locally in those countries where the awards are to be offered. Otherwise information will be available at the local British Diplomatic Mission or British Council office. World Bank Scholarships and Fellowships

Through its management of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) and the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program, the World Bank supplements its training programmes by providing opportunities for postgraduate study and research to promising professionals from developing member countries. Contact the World Bank for information on these programmes.

DFID Shared Scholarship Scheme (DFIDSSS)

Jointly funded by the Department for International Development and certain UK universities, including UEA, the scheme helps students of high academic calibre in developing Commonwealth countries. Candidates must be from a developing Commonwealth country intending to study a subject of developmental relevance, otherwise unable to pay for their studies and outside the scope of existing support schemes. For more information see the Association of Commonwealth Universities web site. UEA has one award per year under this scheme.

Arts and Humanities Research Board (research degrees only)

Home and EU research students may apply to the Arts and Humanities Research Board for graduate studentships, normally through the institution awarding their first degree. Details of these studentships can be obtained from the Arts and Humanities Research Board website.

Overseas Research Students' Award Scheme (research degrees only)

International students may be eligible for funding from the Overseas Research Students' Award Scheme, for which nominations are made through the School and the Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships Programme, for candidates in British Commonwealth countries or British Dependent Territories. British Marshall Scholarships

These are scholarships for American students. For information about British Marshall Scholarships see the British Council USA web pages. American students may also wish to explore funding from the variety of sources in the United States.

UEA and Law School Scholarships

Scholarships for Russian Students

In conjunction with the British Council, the Law School awards one scholarship on a competitive basis to a law postgraduate student from the Russian Federation. The scholarship is for 100 percent of tuition fees. There is a competition for the award. Please contact the Law School or the British Council office in Moscow for further information.

Law in Transition Fellows

In the interest of promoting rule of law in countries in transition, the Law School is pleased to announce the ability to award two partial scholarships on a competitive basis to students from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union. These scholarships typically are for one-half of tuition fees.

Franco-British Lawyers Society Scholarships

Three scholarships of £1300 each are available for French nationals to study for an LLM degree at the Law School.

Applicants should send a completed LLM application form with a letter asking to be considered for the scholarship and proof of level of English language proficiency to Christopher Bennett, Depty School Clerk, Norwich Law School, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK.

The closing date for the next round of applications is 31 July 2005.

UEA Scholarships

The UEA International Office administers a fund providing a number of postgraduate scholarships to well-qualified applicants in all schools of study. The School's Postgraduate Admissions Officer makes nominations to the International Office following the offer of a place on a postgraduate Law programme. There is no need to make a separate application for funding from this source, but your application to the Law School should indicate that you are seeking financial assistance.

Postgraduate Student Association Scholarships

The University Postgraduate Student Association has made a generous offer of funds to defray the costs of fees for deserving LLM students.

The Norwich Law School Postgraduate Fellows Programme (research degrees only)

The Norwich Law School leads the way in postgraduate legal education with its innovative programme of funded teaching and research fellows at the PhD level. he legal academy offers challenging careers in the legal profession. To assist new scholar-teachers, the Law School offers postgraduate fellowships to promising candidates. We seek applicants who have demonstrated an outstanding aptitude for independent legal research. Fellows may acquire experience teaching in the programme, usually in areas of interest of their PhD supervisors. They receive training in university teaching, mentoring from experienced faculty, and participate in the rich agenda of scholarly symposia, lectures, and research seminars for Norwich Law faculty.

UEA Health and Professionals Group Scholarship (research degrees only)

The Health and Professionals Group Sector of the University, of which the Law School forms an integral part, offers scholarships to deserving PhD/MPhil students. Please note that these awards are not available every year.
