Research Training Fellowship
The MRC provides support for talented individuals who wish to pursue acareer in the biomedical sciences, public health and health servicesresearch, through a broad portfolio of personal award schemes. Theserange from studentships for early research training, through topostdoctoral research training fellowships and career developmentopportunities for more senior investigators.
Applications are invited for:
Special Research Training Fellowships in Bioinformatics, Neuroinformatics and Computational Biology
These Fellowships provide specialist multi-disciplinary researchtraining at a doctoral or post-doctoral level. Fellows may, ifappropriate, undertake a relevant Masters degree during the first partof the Fellowship, followed by a period of specialist researchtraining. Award holders will be encouraged to register for a PhD /DPhil (or MD) if they do not already have one.
TheFellowships are aimed at individuals from a variety of researchtraining backgrounds: non-biological as well as biological,non-clinical as well as clinical. A doctorate or informatics researchtraining at a pre-doctoral level is not required but it is expectedthat all applicants will have at least some prior research experience.
Applications are particularly sought from those with advanced trainingin the physical or mathematical sciences or in information technology,who wish to apply their expertise to biomedical problems.
The Fellowship provides the opportunity to further enhance yourresearch training by allowing you to spend up to one year in anoverseas / second UK / UK industry research centre. Applications inComputational Biology from individuals wishing to undertake a placementwithin an NIH / NIGMS laboratory would be particularly welcome.

Who can apply?
Science graduates should hold either a PhD / DPhil in a relevantdiscipline or hold a research-oriented Masters degree and haveundertaken a period (normally not less than three years) of appropriatepostgraduate research.
Medical and dental applicants shouldnormally be immediate post-registration up to Specialist Registrargrade or equivalent level in General Practice.
Nurses,midwives and members of the allied health professions must havecompleted their professional training and have a relevantresearch-oriented Masters degree, or be able to demonstrate a minimumof three years' relevant research experience.
What funding is provided?
Competitive personal salary support is provided plus contributionstowards research costs and attendance at scientific conferences.Support is also available where a period of training at an overseas /second UK / UK industry research centre forms part of your proposal.
The deadline for applications for the above schemes is Friday, 18 February 2005.
As part of the Council's Equal Opportunities policy, consideration willbe given to applicants returning to science following a career break.There are no age limits for any of our schemes and all Fellowships maybe held part-time to accommodate domestic responsibilities.
