Postgraduate Opportunities (2005-2006)
The School of Psychology was given a 5 rating in the 2001RAE exercise, reflecting international excellence in our research. We are seeking to strengthenthat research by recruiting the next generation of researchers in Psychology. The School offersboth a stand alone MSc programme in research methods and PhD training.
MSc Psychological Research Methods
This programme provides comprehensive in-depth training inthe acquisition, analysis and use of research information, from the formulation of researchquestions, through the organisation and analysis of results to the communication of researchfindings. The programme is recognised by the ESRC as providing research training. The modulescover the whole spectrum of research skills and encompass most of the research methods used byPsychologists. There are university scholarships available to fund the Masters' fees, whichwere £3400 for full time students in 2004/2005
6 PhD studentships
The school has two fully funded ESRC (1+3) quotastudentship awards to support New Route PhD training. This consists of a four year programme, thefirst year of which involves completing the MSc in Psychological Research Methods. Theremaining three years of study are dedicated to independent research under the supervision ofa subject expert. The ESRC quota studentships provide tuition fees and a maintenanceallowance, for both the Masters and PhD components of the programme.
The School has up to two fully funded faculty scholarshipsavailable to support +3 studentships and two fees only University Scholarships. For allapplicants who have already completed ESRC recognised research training, the School will support themin making a bid for external studentship funding.
The major research groups in the School are in thinking andreasoning, language and cognitive development, memory, visual and auditory cognition, humanfactors, cognitive and clinical neuropsychology, health psychology, social development andapplied social psychology.
