Portugal: PhD Studentships in Portuguese NLP
The NLX-Natural Language Group at the University of Lisbon has variouspositionsto work on the following topics: corpus and treebanking, ontologies,shallow anddeep linguistic processing. This work is carried on in view of areas such ase-learning environments, the semantic web, question-answering or machinetranslation.
The PhD studentships are for 1 year in first instance, renewable for up to 3years in total. Positions start on 1st December 2005 (or a.s.a.p.), andprovidean annual maintenance grant in a range starting from euro 12,780 (tax free,social security and 24h insurance included). The positions are availableto bothEU- and non-EU-applicants. They all require residence in Lisbon, 35hours/weekresearch, and the stipend must result in a PhD dissertation.
Our ideal candidates have a strong background in (one or more of) naturallanguage processing, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics,cognitive science, or a related field. Good programming skills andexperienceare a strong asset. Native or near-native competence in Portuguese iscrucial.Good communication skills in English (written and oral) are important.Applicants should have a keen interest in problem solving and NLP and acapacityto conduct individual and collaborative research consonant with the projectsunderway at NLX-Group.
The successful applicants will work in a team involved in researchactivitiesbeing carried on in the scope of a number of national and internationalprojects, involving close collaboration with other departments and numerousother Portuguese and international academic institutions.
