Portugal: Doctoral Research Scholarship in Oceanography and Seismology

The Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon,Portugal, is recruiting a young scientist to work at the Institute ofOceanography of the University of Lisbon starting on 15 April 2006.
The position aims at developing a new research tool in the fields ofOceanography and Seismology, making use of seismic methodologies (theMultichannel Seismic Method) to study small-scale ocean physicalprocesses presently poorly resolved by conventional oceanographicmeasurements.
The successful applicant will work within the EU funded STREPS project”Geophysical Oceanography - GO” (http://www.dur.ac.uk/eu.go) usingpast and newly acquired in situ (oceanographic and seismic) data andnumerical modelling tools. The applicant is expected to finish his/herPh.D. during or immediately after the scholarship period under thesupervision of professors from the University of Lisbon.
Applicants for the doctoral position should hold a M.Sc. degree (or,alternatively, a final degree mark equal or over 16/20) in one of thefollowing fields:Physical Oceanography, Geophysics, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics orGeophysical Fluid Dynamics. Preference will be given to candidatesthat reveal knowledge of oceanographic and/or seismic data processingand ocean/atmosphere circulation numerical modelling.

The period of appointment is 34 months. The scholarship amounts to1200eur per month. All costs related to social insurance are supportedby the institution (through project grants), in accordance to therules stipulated by the PortugueseFoundation for Science andTechnology (see http://www.fct.mces.pt). The applicant will have tosupport the Ph.D. fees on his/her own.
