Philippines: Master in Journalism, Manila University


Applicationsfor fellowship grants for a master's degree (M.A.) in journalism arenow being accepted by the Konrad Adenauer Center for Journalism at theAteneo de Manila University (CFJ) for the school year 2005-2006.

Thefellowships are granted to full-time Asian journalists who have beenadmitted to the M.A. Journalism, a 12-course distance learning programadministered by CFJ. Applicants are screened on the basis of theirprofessional and academic record, commitment to journalism andleadership qualities. A grant covers tuition and expenses for books,travel and accommodations.

Applicants from the Pacific Islandsmay also be considered. Applications for admission to the M.A. programand for the fellowships are both due on Friday, April 15 for the firstsemester which starts in June. Twenty-one journalists from sixcountries have received the fellowship since it was established in June2003 to coincide with the launch of the M.A. Journalism program.

Thepresent fellows come from Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India,and from the Philippines. Seven fellows are expected to finish theprogram this month. Ateneo's M.A. Journalism program is distinctive forits innovative use of online and conventional learning methods. Withmost of the courses conducted online, working journalists and otherprofessionals in the program are able to study at their own pace andtime, and in their own homes or workplaces.

Courses in ethics,media law and news writing are at the core of the program. Journalismcourses which are regional and cutting-edge in content comprise theelectives. Lecturers come from Asia as well as Australia, U.K., and theU.S. CFJ, a joint project of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and theAteneo, was founded in June 2000 to promote good journalism in the Asiaregion by providing training opportunities primarily for workingjournalists.
