PhD Studentship in Engineering
University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK
Applications from outstanding candidates are invited for a fully fundedstudentship to undertake PhD studies at the Department of Engineering, within the Communications and Imaging Research Group, in the area ofParallel and Image Processing. Candidates should have at least a 2:1honours degree or MSc in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, oranother related subject. The studentship will cover UK/EU tuition feesand provide a tax-free maintenance grant of 」12,000 per annum for threeyears.
RESEARCH TOPIC AREA
The student will carry out research in the area of embeddedimaging. The aim of this research is to develop novel computingarchitectures and approaches, to facilitate the embedding of imagingand other computational intelligence into instrumentation and compactdevices. The research will involve wavelets in image watermarkingand/or image quality measurement.
RESEARCH GROUP
Communications and Imaging: www.eng.abdn.ac.uk/~comms
The Group uses a wide platform of skills to optimise and introducenew imaging and communication techniques for industrial applications. There is research in areas such as: electronic engineering, communications and internet technologies, image and signal processing, laser technology, holography, VLSI design, parallel systems, andartificial intelligence.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Engineering is a well-established and modernmulti-disciplinary department, which offers postgraduate opportunitiesin a very wide range of topics across the spectrum of engineeringactivity. It is one of the largest departments in the University withan undergraduate population of nearly 600 students and approximately 60postgraduate researchers. All areas of research in the Department aresupported by well-founded laboratories with state of-the-art equipmentand fully networked computing facilities including major engineeringcommercial software. There is excellent technical support provided byelectronic and mechanical engineering workshops.
THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Aberdeen (www.abdn.ac.uk) is a fusion of twoancient universities: King's College, founded in 1495, and MarischalCollege in 1593. For over 500 years, Aberdeen has been outstanding inscholarship. It maintains its tradition with pride and supports a highlevel of teaching and learning underpinned by a first class portfolioof research programmes for more than 13,000 matriculated students. TheUniversity currently has a turnover in excess of 」100 million per annumand employs more than 2,700 staff.
