PhD Studentship Vacancies Starting October 2005

Applicationsare invited for PhD studentships, starting October 2005. The ResearchSchool in the Chemistry Department has an international profile, and issupported by state-of-the-art infrastructure. We can provide a completerange of equipment, facilities and technical expertise to support yourstudies. A £2.2m refurbishment of the Chemistry Building has recentlybeen completed (2003), with brand new laboratories throughout theDepartment. Studentships are available to UK and EU nationals to coverstipend (£12,000 per annum for 2005/6) and tuition fees (£3010 perannum for 2005/6). We have 25-30 studentships available in thefollowing strategic areas:

  • Biological Chemistry
    biocatalysis and biotransformations; computational chemistry; medicinalchemistry and drug design; protein engineering; target synthesis.
  • Fluorine Chemistry
    inorganic and organic synthesis of bioactive and catalytic compounds.
  • Green Chemistry
    environmentally sustainable solvents; atom efficient and polymerisation catalysis.
  • Molecular Properties
    atmospheric chemistry; electrochemistry; free radicals in solution; gas phase dynamics; interfaces; laster spectroscopy.

Funding your studies

UK and EU nationals
The Department has between 25-30 fully funded places available perannum for UK or EU students. These studentships are funded mostly bythe Research Councils and cover living costs (approximately £12,000 perannum) and tuition fees (approximately £3000 per annum) and are awardedon a competitive basis.

Non-EU nationals
Non-EU students are eligible to apply for the PhD programme but mustapply for funding through their home country or through the numerousschemes available to support international students in the UK.

University of Leicester's International Office. The British Council and The Association of Commonwealth Universities also have further information on various funding schemes for international students wishing to study in the UK.
Some students fund the costs of their studies privately: in this case,you are encouraged to make contact with the Department at an earlystage.
