PhD Studentship in Metallurgy, Univ. of Cambridge

The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is one of the foremost research departments in the UK, having been awarded a 6* in the Research Assessment Exercise and is renowned for its research activities in the following areas:

  • Biomaterials
  • Electronic and Device Materials
  • Materials Chemistry
  • Physical Metallurgy
  • Polymers, Ceramics and Inorganic Composites

Research opportunities in these and other areas can be found in our lists of PhD projects available for entry from October 2005; most of these are available for competetive allocation as EPSRC studentships allocated by the Department.

A number of projects have already been allocated full or part funding by external sponsors and are available immediately - see the separate page on Project Studentships.

Potential students should consult the Research area of this website and the guide to Research in Progress for a more complete picture of work currently being performed in the Department.

 Application Procedure

Click as appropriate for details of the application process for UK and EU students and overseas students. A prospectus and application forms may be obtained by filling in the on-line request form.

Cambridge University is an Equal Opportunities Employer and aims to achieve excellence in teaching and research.

For Overseas Applicants

All applications for admission to study for a PhD degree should initially be made through the Board of Graduate Studies from whom an application package, including application forms and Graduate Studies Prospectus, can be obtained via http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/. Completed application forms should be sent to: The Board of Graduate Studies, University of Cambridge, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RZ, who will acknowledge your application and explain what conditions need to be met before you are formally accepted as a postgraduate research student. Your papers will then be forwarded to the Department so that your application can be considered in more detail.

There is a searchable database of the Department's research activities available and details of some of the studentships available will be advertised here during the course of the year. It is always helpful if you can indicate your areas of interest on the application form and you are welcome to contact individual members of the academic staff about potential research projects.

The Department has only very limited funds available to support overseas students. It is therefore very important that you let us know how your proposed research project will be funded. Details of the level of support required and of the scholarships and awards that may be available from some of the Colleges are in the Graduate Studies prospectus. Please note that the closing date for applications for these awards is often many months before the beginning of the academic year.

If you have any queries about the application process or projects available in the Department please contact Dr Rosie Ward, Academic Secretary, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QZ, UK.
