PhD-studentship in Delft University of Technology
PhD-student
Job description
Requirements
The successful candidate has his/her M.Sc degree in physics, electrotechnics or mathematics, and a strong background in signalprocessing. Affinity with the field of acoustics is an advantage. Agood command of the English language is required and well developedcommunicational and social skills are welcomed.
- Teaching & Research
Theresearch will be carried out at the Laboratory of Acoustical Imagingand Sound Control, one of the sections of the IST department. Here, under guidance of a full professor, two associate professors and anassistant professor, and supported by skilled technical and logisticsstaff, about 10 PhD students, 15 MSc students and 5 BSc students dotheir research. A major part of the research is sponsored by oilcompanies, unified in the DELPHI consortium. The thread throughout thisresearch program is the application of array technology. Arrays ofsources and/or detectors are used, in combination with dedicatedsoftware, to compile pictures of the earth bottom (seismicexploration), the human body (medical diagnostics) and constructions(non-destructive testing). Arrays of microphones are used to measuremulti-trace impulse responses in halls for acoustical analysis andoptimization, arrays of loudspeakers are used to generate sound fieldswith natural spatial properties in the entire listeners area (WaveField Synthesis, WFS). In the context of the present project, arrays ofexciters and detectors are applied to measure and analyze bending wavefields.
Organization
The Faculty of AppliedSciences of the Delft University of Technology is the largest and mostscience-oriented faculty of the Delft University of Technology. Atpresent approximately 570 scientists (of which 160 have a permanent andsenior position) are involved in fundamental and application drivenresearch in the disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. Atechnical and administrative staff of 380 people supports them. Strongcollaborative links are fostered with industry and other third leveleducation institutions both in The Netherlands and abroad. The facultyis responsible for the education of some 1025 graduate students(distributed over four Master programmes), 50 postgraduate students and230 PhD students. Furthermore 130 postdocs are working in the faculty.
Department:
Images are pervasive in modern life. From optical images of collidinggalaxies taken by the Hubble telescope to acoustic images ofunderground seismic structures to magnetic resonance images of thehuman body to atomic force images of atoms and molecules to the videoimages that surround us, the acquisition, processing, and analysis ofimages provides a wealth of intellectual, scientific and technicalchallenges.
The research program of the IST department, involving 29 permanentfaculty members, concerns itself with the development of new imageacquisition and processing systems as well as the quantitative analysisof the two-, three-, and four-dimensional images obtained through suchsystems. A variety of imaging modalities and a broad range ofapplication domains are represented in this program.
