PhD Studentship in Corrosion and Protection of Stainless Steel, University of Cambridge
PhD Studentship Available Fully funded by industry
Supervisor: Dr G T Burstein
A fully fundedresearch project is available for a three year programme leading to thePh.D. degree in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy,University of Cambridge. The project is open to all eligible graduatesin materials science, metallurgy, chemistry or chemical engineering. Applicants should be interested in metals, and in corrosion and/orelectrochemistry, but you will acquire this expertise through the3-year programme. A first degree with a minimum II(i) honours standardis required.
This project researches the grain boundarycorrosion of stainless steels used in oil wells and pipelines. Some ofthese steels can suffer intergranular corrosion unexpectedly and theorigins of this are unknown. The research will employ a range of newtechniques which have been developed in the laboratory, includingmicroelectrodics and thermammetry, as well as microanalytical methodsto investigate the problem: its origins, mechanisms and solutions.
Ifyou are interested in problems of corrosion and their solution, thiswill be a fascinating research programme. Corrosion science is aninteresting, multidisciplinary and green subject.
