University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Athree year PhD studentship in the area of text mining applied toBioinformatics and Systems Biology, is available in the BioinformaticsResearch Centre and in collaboration with the Information RetrievalGroup in the Department of Computing Science at the University ofGlasgow, UK. The studentship is available with immediate start and willbe held at the University of Glasgow, involving a period of industrialplacement at CXR Biosciences, Dundee, Scotland.
Thestudentship is funded by Scottish Enterprise, and is part of the largeinterdisciplinary Beacon project "Simulation and Analysis ofBiochemical Networks".
PhD project description:
Much information about experimental investigations in the life sciencesis reported in scientific papers, many of which are held on-line asabstracts or even full-text. This is an active area of research inBioinformatics, and has several challenging problems to be overcome(for example in 'standardising' reports by different researchers aboutthe same or different experiments). We propose to exploit this valuableresource, and to extract data about biochemical networks from on- linetexts, enabling us to utilise the vast resource of public-domaindescriptions of experimental data in Medline. The project would enablethe dissemination of knowledge from the vast resource of public-domaindescriptions of experimental data in Medline by combining data miningtechnologies with novel solutions for data retrieval, storage anddisplay.
Thestudent would be located in the exciting and interdisciplinaryenvironment of the Bioinformatics Research Centre, which is part of theDepartment of Computing Science and located in the Davidson LifeSciences building.
The area of the PhD (Bioinformatics /Systems Biology) is a "hot topic" in both industry and academia, and aPhD will open the doors to exciting career prospects!
Applications
Applicants should have a keen interest in Bioinformatics, withexperience in both life sciences (genetics, molecular biology orbiochemistry) as well as computer science. Ideally the candidate wouldbe a graduate in one of these disciplines and will have at least amaster's degree or 2-3 years in experience in the complimentarysubject. Please submit an application by the method described at http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/phd/application.html.
