PhD Studentship at Warwick in Digital Imaging
PhD Studentship
Warwick HRI
PhD Studentship available with Mr R N Edmondson (Warwick HRI) and Professor R Wilson (University of Warwick) from October 2005
ProjectTitle: Decision support for glasshouse ornamental production usingdigital imaging and artificial neural networks Ref: HRI07-055
Theproject will develop the potential of digital imaging for capturingvisual information on ornamental crops in glasshouses and will developartificial neural networks (ANN's) for analysing and processing digitalplant images in real-time. The aim of the work will be to exploit thepotential for tracking glasshouse ornamental and bedding crops duringproduction using complete visual information on individual plants orpacks at different stages of production. The ANN methodology will beused to match observed plant images against idealised images using adatabase of images and crop specifications. The degree of divergencebetween the matched images will be used to develop ANN rules for makingcrop management decisions such as automated sorting of a non-uniformcrop into uniform sub-batches that could then be managed separately orre-scheduled for marketing purposes. Sorting could be done repeatedlyduring production to produce as many uniform sub-batches as necessaryto meet any required level of ‘within-batch' uniformity.
The studentship is for 3 years with a start date of October 2005 and will be registered at the University of Warwick.
